ATLANTA – Sinking four birdies in his final eight holes, Lipscomb men’s golfer Dawson Armstrong brought home the 2015 Dogwood Invitational at the Druid Hills Golf Club in Atlanta.
Finishing the event at -16, the rising sophomore managed to edge out Belmont’s Ashton Van Horne by one stroke to claim the title at the prestigious event that dates back to 1941. Armstrong fired a -5, 67 on Saturday to win after posting a -6, 66 on Thursday and a -5, 67 on Wednesday. Friday’s round of 18 was washed out shortening the event to 54 holes.
The Brentwood, Tennessee native drained 20 birdies and an eagle to go alongside six bogeys in the three rounds. The victory moved Armstrong up to No. 104 in the world among amateur golfers and gives him automatic exemptions in the Canadian Amateur and the Masters of the Amateurs in Australia.
Considered one of the top-15 amateur golf tournaments in the United States, the Dogwood Invitational dates back to 1941. Past winners include 2013 Master’s champion Adam Scott, Dustin Johnson, Charles Howell III and Carl Pettersson.
