Men's golf ties for seventh at Sea Best Invitational

PONTE VEDRA BEACH, Fla. – The Lipscomb men’s golf team wrapped up play in the 8th-Annual Sea Best Invitational on Tuesday with tying for seventh place alongside Campbell at the TPC Sawgrass Dye’s Valley Course.

The Bisons fired a final day 290 to end the 54-hole event with a +29, 869 (292, 287, 290) just two strokes back of Texas A&M.  Florida continued their dominance on Tuesday winning by 25 strokes over Liberty with a -14, 826.

“For where we started with our first practice on January 12th, this was a ‘b’ performance for us,” said Lipscomb director of golf Will Brewer. “It was good in some ways and rusty in a few others. We didn’t putt the ball extremely well which we typically do.

“The thing I’m proud of is we played hard and gained some respect. We were only a few shots out of fourth place and finished ahead of some teams that were ranked ahead of us going into the tournament.”

Sophomore Dawson Armstrong notched a top-10 performance finishing in sixth behind an even par 210 (71-68-71).  Fellow sophomore Hunter Howell tied for 29th after a final round +2, 72.  He finished the tournament with a +8, 218 (73, 73, 72).

Junior Stoney Crouch carded his best round of the tournament on Tuesday with a +1, 71 ending the event tied for 37th at +10 (77, 72, 71).  Classmate Mikey Feher tied for 57th with a +14, 224 (74, 74, 76) ahead of sophomore Eric Ansett, who tied for 68th behind a +20, 230 (74, 77, 79).

Florida’s Sam Horsfield took home medalist honors with a -7, 203 (65-68-70) beating teammate Alejandro Tosti by three strokes.

“We’re a month away now from our next event in California and this gives us some statistics to look at and really hone in on,” said Brewer. “It helps us to play well and we should see our ranking improve.  That encouraging to our guys and they’re believing more and more every day in what we’re doing and how we’re preparing.  That’s helping them gain more confidence.”

The Bisons continue action on Feb. 29-March 1 in the Southwestern Jones Invitational hosted by Pepperdine in Westlake Village, California.
