Tight match finds Armstrong prevailing to round of 32 at U.S. Amateur

BLOOMFIELD HILLS, Mich. – It was a tight battle on Wednesday for Lipscomb’s Dawson Armstrong in the round of 64 match play at the USGA U.S. Amateur , but the rising junior was able to survive and advance to the round of 32 at the Oakland Hills Country Club in Bloomfield Hills, Michigan.

Seeded No. 2 after his performance in the two stroke rounds, Armstrong went toe-to-toe with England’s Bradley Moore, seeded No. 63.  The match would not be decided until the final hole when Armstrong claimed the victory one up over Moore.

With things all square after the tenth hole, Armstrong birdied the par-4, 11th hole and coupled that with a bogey by Moore on 12 to take a two-hole advantage.  Moore would quickly answer with a birdie of his own on 13 to draw back within one and then drew even with a birdie on 16.

17 would prove to be the difference in the rain-lengthened match as Armstrong sank his fourth birdie of the day before claiming par on 18 to advance to the next round.

Armstrong advances to take on No. 31 Jonah Texeira on Thursday morning.  The duo is slated to tee off at 8 a.m.  Video coverage will be provided on http://www.usga.org
