NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Former Lipscomb golfer Dawson Armstrong will compete in his first PGA Tour event this week at the FedEx St. Jude Classic in Memphis.
Armstrong, a 3-time ASUN Conference Golfer of the Year, earned entry into the field thanks to a sponsor exemption.
He tees off in round one Thursday at 8:50 a.m. in a group that features Roberto Diaz and Conrad Shindler at the 7,244 yard, par-70 TPC at Southwind. Armstrong will play in the same group Friday with a 1:50 p.m. tee time. He had never played the course until this week.
With the U.S. Open just one week away, the 156-player field might not be filled with a ton of headliners like in years past, but joining Armstrong will be a handful of PGA Tour greats. Making a final tune-up before the second major championship of the year will be Phil Mickelson, Dustin Johnson, Brooks Koepka, Henrik Stenson and two-time defending champion Daniel Berger.
The event can be watched live on the Golf Channel Thursday and Friday from 3-6 p.m. and from 12-1:45 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday. CBS will also carry the action from 2-5 p.m. on the final two days. You can also stream the full four-day event on fuboTV, which offers a 7-day free trial for new users.
The Brentwood native has already competed in a pair of professional events. On May 12th he took home first place and $10,000 on the Swing Thought Tour at Three Ridges Golf Club in Knoxville after firing a four-round total of -22 (266) where he edged out Daniel Claytor by two strokes. He carded rounds of 68-64-66-68.
Then on May 24-27 he made his debut on the Web.com Tour at the Nashville Golf Open after earning a sponsor’s exemption from The Snedeker Foundation. Armstrong posted a -9, 279 with rounds of 70-67-73-69 to finish in a tie for 30th.
