STATESBORO, Ga. - The Lipscomb men's golf team finished the first round of The Schenkel Invitational on Friday afternoon and sits in a tie for ninth.
The Bisons fired a 295 on the first day of competition. College of Charelston and Mississippi State are in first place after carding opening-rounds of 283.
The Purple and Gold have two golfers currently in the top-15 on the leaderboard in Linus Samuelsson and Trevor Gold. Samuelsson is tied for ninth at 71 and Gold is tied for 15th at 72.
Samuelsson snuck into the top-10 by sinking an eagle on his final hole of the day. The sophomore also had three birdies on his first-round card.
Gold started out the day on the back-nine and was three-under heading into the turn. He would finish the day with a birdie, two bogeys and a double-bogey to put him at even par.
The tournament will continue with the second round on Saturday and the third and final round on Sunday.
"I'm seeing improvement, but we can compete with the top teams," said Director of Golf Will Brewer. "I think [the team] is starting to believe and they are starting to realize what they are capable of doing. We don't have the experience, but I'm confident for tomorrow."
