NASHVILLE – The Lipscomb men’s golf team is ready to begin tournament play for its 2019-20 season on Monday at the UTSA Lone Star Invitational.
After a 2018-19 season that was filled with injuries and young players gaining experience, the Bisons and director of golf Will Brewer have high expectations for this year.
Lipscomb’s squad this year will be headlined by a trio of seniors, Trevor Gold, Connor McKay and Nolan Ray and a trio of juniors, Davis Armstrong, Linus Samuelsson and Paul Swindell.
Ray joins the Purple and Gold as a transfer after spending the last four years at the University of Tennessee. During the 2018-19 season as a Volunteer, Ray set a career low in scoring average (72.89) and finished tied for 28th at the NCAA Regionals.
Over the summer, Ray took home the title at the 104th Tennessee Amateur Championship by carding a 3-under, 285 (68-69-73-75).
Much like Ray, McKay also had a successful summer out on the links. After a hip injury sidelined him for 18 months forcing him to miss the entirety of the 2018-19 season, McKay battled his way to claim the trophy at the Tennessee Match Play Championship.
After earning the No. 13 seed in bracket play with qualifying rounds of 65 and 73, McKay ran through the competition to make it to the final match where he defeated Belmont’s Jack Uselton.
Swindell finished his sophomore season on a high note by leading the Bisons at the ASUN Championship with a fifth place finish (73-69-74=216). With his impressive outing, he set a career best finish (5th) as well as being named to the All-Tournament team.
This is the second straight year the Bisons open up tournament play at the UTSA Lone Star Invitational.
