It will be remembered as a game of missed opportunities.
Two unsuccessful penalty kicks, one in each period, two failed breakaways and two shots cleared away at the goal line kept the Lipscomb Bisons from overcoming a three-goal North Florida lead in a 3-2 Atlantic Sun loss Thursday night.
The Bisons wasted little time getting the scoring started. Forward Ben Page kicked the ball from about 15 feet out from the right into the left side of the net at 1:59. Midfielder Andy Irvine was given the assist.
"We started off the game the way we wanted to early," said Bisons assistant coach Kevin Burk. "We got the early goal and the early lead."
At 11:45 of the first period North Florida midfielder Martin Schuhte headed in a shot from about 10 feet out from the right side on a pass by midfielder Ryan Brennan.
North Florida made the score 2-1 at 37:47 when forward Martin Pettersson headed in a long pass downfield from goalkeeper Kyle Callahan.
A little over a minute later at 38:49 North Florida would score its third and last goal of the game. Defender Mats Elmasater put the ball past Bisons goalkeeper J.D. Murphy. Schuhte earned the assist.
`Their goals were the result of our defensive lapses, particularly on the outside" said Burk.
The Bisons came out strong in the second period. Defender Micah Johnson scored on a header off of a corner kick from the left side by Page at 68:19.
`We came out fighting in the second period," Burk said. "We came with the intensity that we lacked in the first half. We just failed to convert our chances."
The Bisons had seven corner kicks. North Florida had one.
Callahan made seven saves for North Florida as the Bisons recorded 23 shots, 12 shots on goal. There were three saves credited to the team as the North Florida turned back seven shots by the Bisons in the second half. The Bisons out-shot North Florida 15-6 in the second period.
Murphy made three saves for the Bisons. North Florida made 15 shots, seven shots on goal.
"I'm proud of the way we played in the second period," Burk said. "We had the momentum."
The Bisons are 4-9-1, 1-6-0 in the conference. North Florida is 3-7-1, 3-2-0 in the A-Sun.
The Bisons close out the home portion and A-Sun portion of their schedule Saturday afternoon at 1 against Jacksonville University. The Bisons will also honor the senior members of the team.
