Defensive miscues and missed opportunities on the offensive end allowed 24th-ranked UAB to get out to an early 3-0 lead against the Lipscomb soccer team as the Blazers captured the Hyatt Place Select Invitational with a 4-0 win over the Bisons’ Sunday afternoon at the Lipscomb Soccer Complex.
The loss dropped the Bisons’ record to 3-3, snapping its three-game winning streak, UAB won its fifth straight match to improve to 5-1.
“We didn’t respond well to the adversity we faced in the first half,” Lipscomb coach Charles Morrow said. “We had some early mistakes and goalkeeping errors that led to their first half goals and we left some good opportunities out on the field.”
“I was disappointed in the way we reacted after falling behind in the first half. We talk about responding and bouncing back and we didn’t do that today. When you are playing against a good team, you can’t leave goals out there and we did that today and in the first half against UNC Asheville on Friday.”
Despite holding a 16-13 advantage in the shots department, Lipscomb struggled to keep the Blazers out of the box in the opening stanza.
UAB took a 1-0 lead at the 16:19 mark when Kofi Gyawu took advantage of a scramble in front of the net and struck one by LU goalkeeper Brent McGee into the back of the net.
Five minutes later, the Blazers added to its lead when Anthony King struck one from the end line far post past the outstretched arms of McGee.
With a 2-0 lead, UAB added its third goal of the half when Gentry Smith took advantage of a dropped ball by McGee off a lofted cross to the middle of the box, giving the Blazers a three goal advantage with 10 minutes left before intermission.
UAB (5-1) tacked on its fourth and final goal of the game when Kevin Sawchak converted a penalty kick with just under seven minutes to play in the game.
Isaac Pile made three saves for the Bisons’ in the second period after replacing McGee.
Lipscomb finished the game with five shots on frame as they were shutout for the first time this season.
“The challenge we face now is how we move on from today,” Morrow said. “I am confident the guys will put this game behind them and get back to working hard in practice.”
The Bisons will return to competition next weekend as they travel to the “Buckeye” state for a pair of road contests next weekend. Lipscomb will play Xavier in Cincinnati on Friday before squaring off against the Falcons of Bowling Green on Sunday.
Following Sunday’s game the All-Tournament team was announced. Lipscomb’s Garrett McLaughlin and Kevin Barbar represented the Bisons’ on the team.
