The crowd was large and loud. It was the first Atlantic Sun game of the year. And the Lipscomb Bisons may have been just a little too anxious to want to start conference play with a win.

The Bisons lost 2-1 to Florida Gulf Coast in overtime Friday night at the Lipscomb Soccer Complex. But Bisons’ coach Charles Morrow thinks the first half may have set the stage for defeat.

“We didn’t possess the ball like we wanted to do,” Morrow said. “We were a little bit too frantic with things.

“But I thought we settled in toward the end of the first half and in the second half. We didn’t really give up a whole lot in the second half. We were unfortunate to give up that goal at the end.”

The Bisons jumped out to a 1-0 lead at 13:44 of the first half when Garrett McLaughlin scored on a penalty kick. It was McLaughlin’s third goal of the season.

Florida Gulf Coast tied the game at 17:14 when Ryan Price scored on a shot that deflected off a defender and the goalkeeper.

Josey Portillo scored the game-winning goal 1:47 into overtime on a free kick.

“It was a good play,” Morrow said. “The guy struck the ball really well. It is obviously something that they work on. Florida Gulf Coast executed their set pieces a little better than we did.”

The Bisons outshot Florida Gulf Coast 11-9 and held a 4-3 edge in shots on goal.

The Bisons, who play defending conference champion Stetson Sunday at 2 p.m., are 4-5-0, 0-1-0 in the A-Sun. Florida Gulf Coast is 5-2-2, 1-0 in the conference.

Stetson, 4-2-1, 1-0 in the A-Sun, beat Belmont 1-0 Friday night on a penalty kick.

“This was a tough loss,” Morrow said. “We don’t have time to dwell on it.

“Stetson is a similar team. Both teams have some great individual players. Stetson on the whole is probably a little more dangerous than Florida Gulf Coast.”
