The Lipscomb Bisons hosted IPFW, Friday night, in the Bisons opening match of the Hyatt Place Brentwood Invitational. Two Garret Pettis goals would cross the line for Lipscomb, but they couldn’t pull out the victory, tying the Mastodons 2-2.
The Mastodons got on the board early with a seventh-minute goal by Max Touloute. Touloute took the pass from Jason Mills and outran the Bison defense for the score.
Pettis would net the next two goals for Lipscomb, taking it into the box and faking the keeper for his first tally of the season in the 27th minute and receiving a cross from Kyle Erickson in the 40th minute for his second goal of the night.
The leading active scorer in the Atlantic Sun, Pettis now has 26 career goals. He’s six behind Miguel DaSilva for first all-time in Lipscomb history.
Right before the end of the half, Colin Helmrich received a feed from Myles Stanley and scored his sixth goal of the season for the equalizer.
The second half would be a defensive struggle, with neither side able to make a sustained run. Lipscomb’s offense would post 20 shots for the second time in three games, putting eight on net. Pettis and sophomore Nick Bibb knocked in two apiece.
At the very end of regulation, senior Andrew Chamberlain would head a cross wide and send the game to overtime.
Bibb got a shot on goal the first overtime period, but was turned away by Ryan Bristol, one of the IPFW keeper’s six saves on the night.
Neither squad was able to put a shot on goal in the second overtime as fatigue set in, ending the game in a 2-2 tie.
Lipscomb keeper Brent McGee made three saves on the night, but was not challenged after the 75th minute.
The physicality of the game was great, with four yellow cards being awarded to Lipscomb and three yellows and a red being given to IPFW. The Mastodons played most of the second overtime a man down after Mike Enghofer was sent off.
In earlier action at the Hyatt Place Brentwood Invitational, Belmont defeated Bowling Green, 3-2.
Lipscomb will be back in action against Bowling Green, Sunday, at 3:30 p.m. at E.S. Rose Park in the finale of the Hyatt Place Brentwood Invitational. Belmont will play IPFW at 1 p.m.
