NASHVILLE, Tenn. – It was a weekend of ties for the Lipscomb men’s soccer team at the Hyatt Place Brentwood Invitational. After a late-night draw with IPFW, Friday night, the Bisons split Sunday’s match with Bowling Green, 1-1.
Bowling Green (4-2-1) would get on the board early, with a fifth-minute goal from a Colin Armstrong header; Brandon Silva would get credit on the assist and the Falcons would be flying high early.
Lipscomb would bring Bowling Green back down to earth in the 33rd minute when senior Garret Pettis banged home his third goal of the tournament on a low cross from freshman Zander El-Hindi. Pettis deposited it in the lower right corner of the net and Lipscomb would even the match back up.
As was the case Friday, the scoring but not the excitement would end in the first half between Lipscomb and Bowling Green. Pettis would hammer the net all night long, putting three shots on goal and firing eight overall, tying a career high set back on Sep. 18, 2009 against UNC Asheville; Pettis scored in that game as well.
Bowling Green outflanked Lipscomb in shots on goal, 8-5, led by Zach Lemke’s four. The Falcons kept senior keeper Brent McGee busy all night; the stopper turned away seven consecutive shots to end the game after allowing Armstrong’s early tally.
While Lipscomb’s offense continued to get good looks, Bowling Green continued to put the ball on net. The Falcons had a shot on goal in both halves and both overtimes, but were stymied by McGee at every turn.
In the opposing net, Bowling Green’s Miguel Rosales made four saves.
Following the tournament Pettis, sophomore Joey Chiappetta and sophomore Kyle Erickson were named to the All-Tournament team. Neighboring Belmont defeated IPFW 4-0 earlier Sunday to win the Hyatt Place Select Invitational; Lipscomb would finish second.
The Bisons hit the road next weekend for their final tune-ups before Atlantic Sun play begins. Lipscomb will be at Eastern Illinois Thursday, Sep. 22, at 4:30 p.m. and will travel to SIU-Edwardsville Saturday, Sep. 24 for a 7 p.m. match.
