MACON, Ga. – The Lipscomb men’s soccer team had two members honored for their play during the 2012 season. Sophomore Omar Djabi was named to the All-Atlantic Sun Second Team while Reece Holcombe was chosen to the All-Atlantic Sun Freshman Team.
Djabi, who was honored last season as a member of the All-Freshman team, did not suffer from a “sophomore slump” scoring two goals and chipping in two assists from the defensive line.
“Omar is a very versatile player,” Lipscomb head coach Charles Morrow said. “It is a case of him building upon his success from his freshman year and making the All-Freshman team. He has been very solid in the backfield for us.”
Djabi started 16 of 18 games for the Bisons, attempting 15 shots. It was Djabi’s goal at Central Arkansas that thrust the Bisons to their first victory of the season. He picked up his second goal against Oral Roberts.
Holcombe, the only unanimous selection to the squad, started the season slow while getting his feet under himself but really got rolling starting with the last non-conference game of the year. In that contest, Holcombe hit the game-winner against Belmont to carry the Bisons to victory over their rival.
“I think Reece has really grown as a player,” Morrow said. “Coming in, he was probably a little unprepared for what lay ahead of him. He worked hard and kept a good attitude. As the year has gone on, he has only gotten stronger and stronger.”
The Birmingham, Ala. native leads the Bisons with four goals on 21 shots and accumulated two assists. Holcombe’s assist at Jacksonville in overtime helped the Bisons secure the victory while he also added a goal and an assist in Lipscomb’s victory over the A-Sun champions, Florida Gulf Coast.
The Bisons play in the quarterfinal round of the A-Sun Tournament on Wednesday at 6 p.m against USC Upstate.
