Fort Myers, Fla. – After making the semifinals of the Atlantic Sun Championship in five of the past seven seasons, the Lipscomb men’s soccer team will look to reach new heights on Friday and make it to the championship game for the first time in program history.

The No. 3 seeded Bisons will face in-state rival and No. 2 seed East Tennessee State University at the FGCU Soccer Complex at 3 p.m. CST.

Two weeks ago the Purple and Gold traveled to Johnson City, Tenn. and drew with the Bucs 0-0 in double overtime, a game the Bisons felt they could have won.

If there is one advantage Lipscomb has over ETSU, it is that it has already played a game since making the trek to south Florida and the Bucs have not. As a reward of getting the No. 2 seed, the Bucs received a first round bye and have not played a game since Nov. 5th when they defeated Wofford College 3-2.

Lipscomb (9-8-2) is coming off a 1-0 win over Jacksonville on Wednesday. The game was scoreless until the 62nd minute when junior Zander El-Hindi found Atlantic Sun All-Conference Second Teamer Luke Gearin on a well-placed ball in the box for a game-winning header. The goal was Gearin’s fifth of the season; second most on the team.

The Bisons last met ETSU in the A-Sun tournament in 2010 in the first round. The Bucs were the No. 1 seed and defeated Lipscomb 1-0 in two overtimes. Lipscomb is 2-5-1 versus ETSU in the series history.

Goals may be tough to come by in Friday’s matchup as the two teams have combined for 16 shutouts on the year, ETSU has nine and Lipscomb has seven.

The seven by Lipscomb is the most in school history in a single season and five of that total came in A-Sun play. In nine conference games the Bisons have only given up six goals. No one all season has scored more than two goals against Lipscomb’s stingy defense. They have given up the fewest goals in a single season in school history, 19.

The Bucs goalie, Ryan Coulter, was named the A-Sun Goalkeeper of the Year after an outstanding season in goal. He leads the conference with a goals against average of 0.82 and nine shutouts.

Lipscomb’s offense isn’t too bad either, scoring the third most goals in the A-Sun with 21. In conference games only the Bisons have 134 shot attempts, 21 more than any other team.

In the second game of Friday night, the host and No. 1 seed FGCU will match up with No. 5 seed North Florida. The winner will face either Lipscomb or ETSU in the championship game on Sunday at 12 noon CST.
