NASHVILLE, Tenn. - The Lipscomb men’s soccer team played host to the First Annual Spring Collegiate Soccer Showcase on Saturday.
Participating in the event alongside Lipscomb were Belmont, Kentucky, Lindsey-Wilson, Memphis and UAB. The Bisons split on the day dropping the first game to Kentucky 1-0 and winning the second game over UAB 4-2.
The win versus the Blazers marks the first time in program history that the Bisons have beaten them. UAB is coming off a successful fall season having been ranked as high as No. 8 in the nation.
“I think today was an important step for our players proving to themselves that they can play with and beat anyone,” Lipscomb coach Charles Morrow said. “The Kentucky result was unfortunate in that we felt we carried most of the play and Kentucky’s goal occurred right after a huge substitution that was unrealistic.
“It’s a tough situation to put players in, but this is the spring and now is the time to get players the experience that they will need for the fall.”
The Kentucky goal occurred just after the Bisons substituted all 10 field players.
“The UAB game was one of the most entertaining games of the year for us,” Morrow said. “They (UAB) are one of the most athletic teams in the country and are a handful to defend. Our players’ responses to going down and then finding their way back into the game was tremendous.
“Getting a result is huge for our player’s confidence moving forward. Kentucky and UAB are generally teams that would host an NCAA Tournament first round. With the goal of getting in and advancing on in the NCAA tournament, it is important for our guys to know that these are teams that we can beat and that we belong on that stage.”
The Bisons wrap up the spring season hosting Belmont Saturday, April 12th at 6 p.m.
