Lipscomb's Bisons soccer team went after a second-straight Atlantic Sun victory Saturday night but fell 3-1 to visiting Campbell University.
The Bisons scored the first goal of the game at 18:58 of the first half when midfielder Josh Cline fired a shot that was deflected off of a Campbell player and into the net.
The advantage was short-lived. Campbell forward Willy Guadarrama took a shot that was blocked by Lipscomb goalkeeper J.D. Murphy and the followed up on his own rebound for a goal from about 10 feet away at 23:30 of the first half.
"The hardest thing to stomach is that we were up 1-0 ," said Lipscomb Coach Charles Morrow. "On a team like that, if you go up by a goal and they are just going to sit in then we needed to play keep away from them. We didn't do a very good job of that at all."
Midfielder Sonny Guadarrama scored the go-ahead goal from 15 yards out at 42:34.
Campbell added an insurance goal in the second half. Willy Guadarrama split a pair of Lipscomb defenders to find open ground on a breakaway. He took a shot from approximately 12 yards out that went into the right side of the net for his second goal of the game.
Campbell posted 11 shots in each half with nine shots on goal for the game. Sonny Guadarrama and Willy Guadarrama each had five shots and each made three shots on goal.
"We knew about those two players coming into the game," said Morrow. "And we weren't tight enough against them. They are good players. "
`Their line of confrontation is midfield," said Morrow. "They are only going to defend in their half which makes it hard to get behind them. We didn't do a good job of being patient with our possession of the ball and trying to spread them to look for opportunities."
In the second half the Bisons made 10 shots despite Campbell putting more pressure on the ball.
"Campbell tightened things up in the second half," said Morrow. "They tightened their markings up but they still weren't coming out very far."
Murphy made six saves for the Bisons. Campbell goalkeeper Aaron Johnson was credited with five saves.
Campbell is 8-3-1 overall, 4-1 in the A-Sun. The Bisons are 3-7-1, 1-4 in the conference. The Bisons home record is 2-1-1.
"We're a solid team, and we have good players, but we don't have a difference maker," said Morrow. "Xander Vooys is a difference maker in the back. We don't have someone who can take over. That's the difference between us and the teams that are getting results against us."
