Lipscomb Kicks Off Season Against Georgia State, Memphis
NASHVILLE, Tenn. – After a training since the beginning of August, the Lipscomb men’s soccer team kicks off the regular season, Friday, with a 3 p.m. match against Georgia State at the LU Training Field behind Cofers Chapel Church, on the corner of Caldwell Lane and Franklin Pike.

The Bisons enter the regular season coming off a strong exhibition campaign, drawing with Conference USA foe UAB and defeating Trevecca.

Returning for the Bison this season is perennial all-conference performer Garret Pettis, who was named to the preseason all-conference team by a vote of the conference coaches. The Elizabethtown, Pa., native scored in the exhibition match against UAB and stands to move up the Lipscomb all-time career lists in goals (24, second), points (55, third) and shots (143, third).

Pettis is one of six seniors beginning their final seasons at Lipscomb; joining him are Evan McGee, Brent McGee, Ethan Summers, Andrew Chamberlain and Drew Longinotti.

Eleven freshmen join the 2011 squad, with talented newcomers such as Robbie Johnson, Omar Djabi, Ben Gates and Evan Beutler among those expected to contribute right away.

Last season, Georgia State defeated Lipscomb, 2-1, in exhibition play; departed Bison Garrett McLaughlin put home a penalty kick in the 19th minute. Brent McGee made three saves for the Bisons.

Lipscomb and Georgia State last met in the regular season in 2007, with Georgia State prevailing in Nashville by a score of 4-3. All-time, Lipscomb is 0-5 against Georgia State.

The Panthers went 7-7-3 in 2010, and return nine starters. Among these are preseason all-conference goalkeeper Vincent Foermer and leading scorer Evan Scott. Recently, the Panthers were picked to finish 12th in the Colonial Athletic Association by a vote of the league’s coaches.

Sunday, the Bisons will hit the road for a match at Memphis, beginning at 7 p.m. at the Tigers Mike Rose Soccer Complex.

Memphis was eighth in C-USA last season, going 5-11-1; they return 10 starters from that squad and boast a strong upper class (three seniors, six juniors). The Tigers return their lead scoring trio of Mark Sherrod, Parker Duncan and Liam Collins (each of whom garnered 10 points apiece) along with starting keeper Jordan Leedle, a native of nearby Brentwood.

Recently, the Tigers were picked to finish ninth in Conference USA by a vote of the league’s coaches.

Lipscomb hasn’t played the Tigers since 2004, taking a 6-0 loss; all-time, the Bison are 0-5 against Memphis.

Following this weekend, the Bison will travel to High Point, N.C. for a Thursday night tilt with High Point. The Bison will return next Sunday for a 2 p.m. home match with Xavier.
