Lipscomb Set to Host Annual Tournament

Lipscomb’s men’s soccer team will host the fourth-annual Hyatt Place Brentwood Invitational, beginning Friday afternoon at E.S. Rose Park at 3:30 p.m. Lipscomb, Belmont, IPFW and Bowling Green will compete in what’s becoming a prominent collegiate competition around the south. Lipscomb will face IPFW (Friday, 6 p.m.) and Bowling Green (Sunday, 3:30 p.m.) in the tournament.

The Bisons will be spending their second consecutive weekend at Rose Park after competing at last weekend’s Belmont Mafiaoszo Tournament, defeating VMI and losing to Georgia Southern. The Hyatt Place Brentwood Tournament is being held at Rose Park due to the continued lighting work being done at the Lipscomb Soccer Complex.

At 1-5-0, Lipscomb will try to use this weekend to work on the offensive end; the Bisons offense (three goals in six games) will have to get on track to take pressure off senior keeper Brent McGee.

McGee and freshman defender Omar Djabi earned all-tournament honors at last weekend’s. In other accolade news, senior Garret Pettis was named one of the top 20 players in the Atlantic Sun by, Thursday. Pettis is the active A-Sun leader in points (55) and goals (24).

IPFW fell to 14th-ranked Kentucky, 4-2, and defeated Western Michigan, 2-1, last week. In action earlier this week, the Mastodons lost to Xavier, 5-0, which defeated Lipscomb 1-0 on Sep. 4.

The Mastodon offense relies heavily on Max Touloute (seven goals, three assists) and Colin Helmrich (five goals, one assist), who have accounted for 28 of IPFW’s 40 points this season. Netminder Ryan Bristol, a 6-8 specimen in net, has made 29 saves but sports a 2.11 GAA this season.

Bowling Green went 2-0 at last week’s Pitt/Nike Invitational, defeating Duquesne 1-0 in double overtime and host Pittsburgh 1-0 in regulation.

Michael Wiest has three shutouts and boasts a 0.48 GAA in four games this season. In four starts, he has three victories and has allowed just two goals. He shut out then-9th ranked Michigan, 2-0, to open the season on Aug. 26.

IPFW and Bowling Green met on Aug. 31, with the Falcons coming away with a 3-0 victory. Zach Lemke, Rodcliff Hall and Ryan Comiskey scored for Bowling Green, with Wiest making three saves for the shutout.

Lipscomb closes out the non-conference schedule next week with matches at Eastern Illinois (Sep. 22, 4:30 p.m.) and Southern Illinois-Edwardsville (Sep. 24, 7 p.m.) The Bisons next home match will be Sunday, Oct. 9 in the “Battle of the Boulevard” match against Belmont.
