MACON, Ga. – Lipscomb senior forward Garret Pettis has been named the Atlantic Sun Men’s Soccer Player of the Week, the conference office announced, Monday.
Pettis scored a career-high four goals in Lipscomb’s 5-0 victory against North Florida, Sunday. The Elizabethtown, Pa. native tied the Lipscomb record with his offensive explosion, equaling the mark set by Scott Mason against Centenary on Oct. 24, 2005; no A-Sun player had scored four goals in one contest since Mason. The performance is also tied for the seventh-best goal-scoring output by an individual in single game in A-Sun history.
“He was supremely frustrated, as we all were, after Friday’s loss (to Jacksonville),” said Lipscomb head coach Charles Morrow. “We challenged the players on Sunday, and obviously he responded. It’s good to see him get going at the right time of the year; hopefully he keeps it going through the rest of the season.”
The scoring binge came quickly for Pettis; he scored all four goals in the first 30 minutes of play, Sunday.
With his final goal of the day, Pettis tied former teammate Miguel DaSilva for most goals in a career by a Bisons player with 32.
“It was timely, not only in terms of us needing points (in the conference standings), but in terms of him tying the single-game mark and tying Miguel for career goals," said Morrow. "For him to do that all in one day is a pretty big day.”
Pettis is now the A-Sun’s season-leader in points (19) and tied with Belmont’s Brandon Tarr for the league lead in goals (8).
The award is Pettis’ first weekly award by the conference office this season, and the third of his career. He’s the first Bison to win a weekly A-Sun award since Joey Chiappetta for the week of Oct. 18, 2010.
ETSU's Nick Dykes earned A-Sun Defensive Player of the Week honors.
