MACON, Ga. – The Atlantic Sun Conference announced its men’s soccer postseason awards, Monday. The Lipscomb men’s soccer team had three individuals earn honors for the 2011 season.
Senior Garret Pettis was named to the first team for the second consecutive season. Now a three-time All-Conference selection, Pettis led the Bisons with nine goals and 21 points in 2011, including a four-goal performance against North Florida, Oct. 21.
The all-time leading goal scorer in program history, Pettis finished tied for second in points and was third in goals and shots in the Atlantic Sun. He’s the conference’s active leading scorer with 76 career points. He was named to the All-Tournament team at the Hyatt Place Select Lipscomb Invitational, Sept. 16-18.
Sophomore Kevin Barbar earned a spot on the second-team as a defender. An All-Freshman performer last season, Barbar started 14 games on the backline this season, logging 1,172 minutes. He assisted on Pettis’ game-winning goal against North Florida and provided steady play at center back throughout the season.
Barbar was at his best against A-Sun competition, holding conference leaders such as Gonzalo De Mujica, Aaron Schoenfeld and Xavier Silva scoreless in their matches against Lipscomb.
Freshman defender Omar Djabi joined Barbar as backline Bisons with an all-freshman pedigree, earning himself a spot on the 2011 All-Freshman squad. Djabi led Lipscomb with 1,511 minutes played, starting 17 matches and playing 90 minutes or more on 14 occasions.
Djabi, who graduated from nearby Franklin High School but was born in Venezuela, is one of 10 international players named to the A-Sun All-Freshman team for 2011.
The trio, along with the rest of the Bisons, will head to Johnson City this week to begin play in the Atlantic Sun Tournament. Fourth-seeded Lipscomb opens the ETSU-hosted event Wednesday at 3 p.m. (CT) against No. 5 seed Mercer.
