NASHVILLE, Tenn. – The Lipscomb men’s soccer team began fall camp today in preparation for the 2012 season. After waiting and anticipation coach Charles Morrow was eager to get into practice.
“We are just excited to get started,” said Morrow. “We go through a long spring and summer of waiting and anticipating getting the season started. It is good to have everybody in.
“We started off with a fitness test and got out shortly after breakfast to get our first session in. Our first two sessions were seeing where guys are at fitness wise and with 11-side playing having an opportunity in that setting where they are at playing wise and get a better idea where we are playing personalities and attributes.”
The Bisons opened camp with 31 student-athletes including 12 returners on the field. Sophomore Omar Djabi returns after starting all 18 games that he played in last season, accumulating one assist and one shot on goal from the defensive line. Senior Jeremy Reid, who started 14 games last season, returns with a goal and two assists to his credit to go along with three shots on goal. Kyle Erickson, a junior midfielder, led the Bisons with four assists last season while starting 10 games. Ethan Summers, who missed last season with an injury, returns as a savvy fifth year veteran after starting all 19 games two years ago for the midfield and defense.
Looking for senior leadership, Morrow looks for two veterans in Summers and Reid to step up as natural leaders.
“Ethan and Jeremy are fifth year seniors, those roles are natural to them,” Morrow said. “Over half the team came in for captain’s practices before we even started, that is something they as players organized. Some leadership roles are already established…there are several incoming guys that we would like to see take a role as well.”
The Bisons kick-off the season with two exhibition contests, a home game against Alabama-Huntsville on Aug. 16 at 7 p.m. and a road contest at Louisville on Aug. 20 at 7 p.m. The first regular season tilt will be at Evansville on Aug. 24. Before the Bisons open home play on Aug. 26 with a 6 p.m. match against Eastern Illinois.
