Bisons soccer picked fifth

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Lipscomb men’s soccer team has been picked to finish fifth in the Atlantic Sun Conference preseason coaches’ poll released Thursday. The Bisons, 4-12-3 and 3-4-1 in A-Sun play last season, garnered 36 points to place them in a tie with Jacksonville finishing behind Mercer with 53 points. LU finished ahead of seventh place USC Upstate with 28 points.

ETSU was tabbed as the league favorite, picking up 78 points and six first-place votes. Florida Gulf Coast, the 2011 conference champions, was picked as a close second with 75 points and three-first place votes.

Jonathan Mendoza of Stetson was tabbed as the Preseason Player of the Year as Luis Ocejo of Stetson was tabbed the Preseason Defensive Player of the Year. The top goalkeeper pick in the conference belongs to Ryan Coulter of ETSU.

The Bisons open the season with an exhibition contest against Alabama-Huntsville on Thursday Aug. 16 at the Lipscomb Soccer Complex at 7 p.m. The first regular season game will be at Evansville on Friday Aug. 24.
