Bisons soccer opens A-Sun play

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – The Lipscomb men’s soccer team opens Atlantic Sun Conference play with a 7 p.m. match Thursday at Mercer in Macon, Ga., and a 7 p.m. match Saturday against Florida Gulf Coast at the Lipscomb soccer complex.

Coming off a 1-0 defeat of Belmont, retaining the Red Bull Trophy, the Bisons enter the weekend 3-7-0.

After falling in three straight contests, Lipscomb received an 18-yard shot from freshman Reece Holcombe to boost the Bisons to victory over Belmont. LU only attempted three shots compared to the eight of the Bruins. Freshman goalkeeper Miguel Hof earned his first career shutout in the effort.

Mercer enters Thursday’s contest 6-3-1 and 1-0 in conference play. The Bears opened A-Sun play last Sunday with a 2-1 victory over East Tennessee State and have won five of their last six games.

Led by Will Betts, the Bears have scored 19 goals. Betts has a team-leading four goals while Richie Edondson has three goals. Eleven different Bears’ have scored a goal this season. Ryan King has a team leading 18 shots with 12 on frame but has only landed one in the back of the net. Goalkeeper Greg Ranjitsingh has played every minute in the net stopping 41 shots and leads the A-Sun with a 0.88 goals against average. Ranjitsingh also has an A-Sun leading five shutouts.

Florida Gulf Coast University, picked second in the A-Sun Preseason Poll, enters the weekend 3-4-1 and will play its first conference game at Northern Kentucky on Thursday. FGCU has played three ranked teams in its non-conference schedule and ended with a 3-0 loss to No. 13 University of South Florida last Tuesday.

The Eagles are led by William Morse with three goals and an assist. Felipe DeSousa has two goals and an assist. Goalkeeper Nathan Ingham has 26 saves with 13 goals against, with a save percentage of .667.

Following the initial set of A-Sun games, the Bisons stay at home to face league-favorite ETSU with a 7 p.m. match on Saturday, Oct. 13 at the Lipscomb Soccer Complex.
