NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Continuing its longest home stretch of the season, the Lipscomb men’s soccer team will fight two battles on Saturday night at the Lipscomb Soccer Complex. Along with hosting ETSU at 7 p.m. the Bisons are also sponsoring the third annual Coaches vs Cancer Soccer Match.
The Bisons are coming off a thrilling 3-1 defeat over two-time defending A-Sun champions Florida Gulf Coast. It marked the first Bisons victory over the Eagles since Oct. 19 2007. Luke Salmen scored the first goal of the game, which was also his first goal in a Lipscomb uniform. Josue Chavez and Reece Holcombe also added goals for the Bisons. Goalkeeper Miguel Hof had a career-high seven saves to help LU’s effort.
Holcombe and Chavez have pushed their freshman campaigns to five points each, after identical weekends of a goal scored and an assist. Hof has 26 saves on the season and a 2.45 goals against average but has been stellar of late. Over his last three games, Hof has a 1.50 goals against and 14 saves, to go with a .824 save percentage.
Last season, the Bisons upset the 22nd-ranked Buccaneers 2-1. It was the program’s first victory against ETSU since 2008. Graduated seniors Nick Bibb and Garret Pettis scored the Bisons goals. LU outshot ETSU 14-11 also holding a 6-4 edge in shots on goal. The victory also marked the first time Lipscomb had defeated a ranked opponent.
ETSU, the preseason coach’s favorite, enters Saturday’s contest 6-5-2 overall and 2-1-0 in Atlantic Sun play. After victories over North Florida and Jacksonville, ETSU went out of conference playing host to No. 18 Wake Forest Tuesday night. The Bucs received a desperation game-tying goal with three seconds on the clock from Emmanuel Wilson.
ETSU’s lone loss in conference play was at the hands of Mercer, a 2-1 defeat in Johnson City.
The Buc’s offense flows through David Geno with nine goals and five assists good for 23 points. Luis Calzadilla is second on the team with eight points as he has scored three goals and assisted on two. Goalkeeper Ryan Coulter was chosen as the preseason goalkeeper of the year has spent all 1,264 minutes between the posts for the Bucs. He has accumulated 40 saves and a 1.21 goals against average, good for a .702 save percentage.
In a battle with other schools of the A-Sun, the men’s soccer team has raised $1,200 for the American Cancer Society. The goal of the Bisons is to raise $1,500 and with the generosity of the fans, the goal can become a reality.
