Rematch with FGCU in semifinals awaits Bisons soccer

FT. MYERS, Fla. – For the third time in program-history, the Lipscomb men’s soccer team is in the semifinal round of the Atlantic Sun Tournament.

The Bisons defeated USC Upstate 1-0 Wednesday night to earn the right to face No. 1 seed and tournament host Florida Gulf Coast. The Bisons handed FGCU its only conference loss with a 3-1 victory at the Lipscomb Soccer Complex on Oct. 6.

Junior Tyler Burkhardt struck the game-winner in Wednesday’s contest, his second goal for the year, and in as many games. Junior goalkeeper John Schnurbusch earned his third shutout on the season.

FGCU earned the No. 1 seed by defeating Mercer last Saturday, to claim the regular season title. In the winner-take-all match, Santiago Echeverri tallied the game-winner in the 51st minute to secure the third-straight regular season title.

Over the three- year span, the Eagles are 22-2-1 in the A-Sun. FGCU is led by A-Sun Freshman of the Year Felipe DeSousa. With a team high 13 points, DeSousa knocked in six goals and added an assist. William Morse and Henry Penagos chipped in three goals apiece.

Goalkeeper Nathan Ingham played all 16 games for FGCU making 46 stops with a .708 save percentage. Ingham allowed 19 goals for a 1.13 goals against average.

In the meeting on Oct. 6, the Bisons notched three goals in a 19 minute span to take a 3-0 lead. Luke Salmen, Josue Chavez and Reece Holcombe all scored for Lipscomb. The Eagles scored an 83rd minute goal to cut into the lead but could not muster any other attempts.

The winner Friday moves on to the Championship match, facing the winner of ETSU and Mercer at 2 p.m. on Sunday.
