NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Lipscomb men’s soccer coach Charles Morrow has announced the addition of five more student-athletes to the 2013 class. The addition of these five athletes brings the 2013 class to 11 new faces in the fall.
Benaiah Shaw is a midfielder who has had some national experience. Shaw, a native of Lawrenceville, Ga., was invited for a trial with the U17 Jamaican National Team. He was also a Georgia State Cup Finalist in 2012 and ODP participant from 2008 to 2011.
“Benaiah is a quick and technical midfielder,” Morrow said. “Benaiah has tremendous work-rate and we are looking forward to getting him here in the fall.”
Chad Swieca will add depth to the defensive line. A native of Sugar Grove, Ill., Swieca competed for the Illinois Olympic Development Program. His ODP team garnered third place honors at nationals.
“Chad is a versatile defender who will bring size and physicality to the back line,” Morrow said. “Chad will be a quality defender and compliment the other incoming defenders and returning players. He has the chance to be a dominant player in the Atlantic Sun.”
Nick Ranieri, a native of Loveland, Ohio, brings international experience to the Bisons. Ranieri had trials with A.S Bari, A.S Roma and A.C Lazio in Italy in 2011. During his prep career, Ranieri led his team in assists and was second on the team in goals scored enroute to being named team MVP.
“Nick is a natural midfielder who has a knack for finding the ball and putting himself in dangerous positions,” Morrow said. “Nick’s work rate and vision will bring much needed energy and craftiness to the middle of the field for the Bisons. He has the experience playing both a holding and attacking midfielder and has the skill and ball handling ability to make an impact within the Bisons roster.
Local product Josh Russell will bring competition to the front line. Russell, of Christ Presbyterian Academy, led his squad in scoring for three straight years. With his club team, Russell won the Tennessee State Cup in 2011 and 2012 while finishing third in the nation in 2011.
“A local standout from the Tennessee Soccer Club, Josh will come into the Bisons program as an attacking threat,” Morrow said. “A true goal-scorer at the youth level, Josh will work hard to transition his physical and technical gifts to the college game.”
Joining a former teammate, Daniel Vieira joins the squad from Johannesburg, Gauteng, South Africa. Vieira is a former teammate of current Bison Miguel Hof. Vieira has won numerous tournaments in South Africa including the Inter-Provincial Tournament, RCLFA Cup and FAP Cup.
“Daniel will join the team as an attacking midfielder,” Morrow said. “He is a highly sought after South African native and will be looked upon to be a contributor early in his career. His time spent overseas will provide valuable soccer experience and perspective to the Lipscomb program.”
The class joins Timothy Horth, Kit Huddleston, Cameron Botes, Lucas Wiman, Scout Monteith and Micah Bledsoe for the 2013 class. All 11 student-athletes will report in July for fall camp.
