NASHVILLE, TENN.- Lipscomb's men’s soccer team kicked their way to a 5-0 win against the Chargers of Alabama-Huntsville to improve to 2-0 in the final tune-up match of the preseason.
The Bisons got started quickly as sophomore forward Reece Holcombe scored on an 18-yard strike from the top of the box in the first minute of the match. Teamwork was key in setting up the goal as Josue Chavez lobbed a kick up field to Zander El-hindi, who then pushed a cross to the top of the box for Holcombe’s strike.
“It was a lot of work on my part,” said Holcombe, “but as long as I have guys behind me doing the same amount of work, it pays off.”
Luke Gearin continued his execution from last week’s win over Martin Methodist. Gearin placed a ball in the bottom right off a corner kick assist from Matt Kerridge.
The goal was Gearin’s third in two games. If his play continues into the regular season, it could be a special season for the Aussie.
In the first half, the Bisons led 2-0 and outshot UAH 9-4.
The second period was a better all-around team effort according to coach Morrow.
“The first half we got caught being too greedy at times,” Morrow said, “In the second half, we created opportunities out of the ball movement, it was much better.”
Better spacing in the second frame led to the third goal of the match as Omar Djabi placed a free kick perfectly for defender Robbie Johnson as he scored his first goal of the preseason on a header.
It was then Holcombe’s time again. Sophomore Josue Chavez directed a great lead pass to Holcombe for his second goal of the night.
“Josue gave me a good ball on the second goal and I finished it near post,” said Holcombe, “Just a good ball and a good finish.”
In the second half, the Bisons dominated the Chargers with stifling defense and did not allow a shot opportunity. For the game, Lipscomb outshot the Chargers 18-4 and led 7-1 on corners.
Next week begins regular season play, as the soccer version of “Battle of the Boulevard” takes place on Friday at the Lipscomb Soccer Complex at 7 p.m. Coach Morrow believes his team will be ready for the matchup, “We are eager and looking forward to Belmont on Friday, but we also have a lot of work to do before then."
