"Battle of the Boulevard" kicks-off Bisons 2013 regular season
Thursday, August 29, 2013
By Kirk Downs

After weeks of preseason practices and two exhibition wins, the Bisons look to kick-start their 2013 season as the Bruins from Belmont invade the Lipscomb Soccer Complex on Friday Aug. 30 at 7 p.m.

Preseason play has been exceptional for the Bisons as they claimed a 4-1 victory over Martin Methodist and a 5-0 win over Alabama-Huntsville.  The preseason was all about getting experience for this team in preparation regular season play.

With many new faces on the roster, Coach Morrow will be leaning on his upperclassmen for leadership. Lipscomb will dress 29 student-athletes, including 12 freshman and only two seniors.

Omar Djabi, midfielder, picked up a few preseason accolades leading into his junior campaign. He earned spots on both the A-Sun Coaches and College Sports Madness First Teams.

Sophomore Reece Holcombe and Junior Robbie Johnson were named to the College Sports Madness A-Sun second team. Holcombe led last year’s squad with four goals and 10 points as a true freshman.

Eight starters return from a 2012 squad that finished 7-12-1, tied for fifth in the Atlantic Sun Conference.

This season, the Herd returns 72 percent of its goals, 47 percent of assists and 64 percent of its points from the 2012 team.

Many freshmen will get a chance to play a big role in the success of this team, including freshman goalkeeper, Micah Bledsoe, who started both exhibition games in the net.

The Bisons were picked to finish fourth in the Preseason Atlantic Sun Coaches Poll while FGCU earned the top spot with seven first place votes.

Coach Morrow begins his 9th season as head man of the Bisons soccer. Since he took over the program, Morrow owns the Bruins with a (6-1-2) record in eight years. The Red Bull Trophy has never left Lipscomb University in its existence.

Looking forward to the next opponents, the Bisons will travel north for a tournament in Dayton, Ohio. Friday Sept. 6, the squad will face Eastern Illinois at 3:30 p.m. before battling the host Dayton on Sunday Sept. 8 at 1 p.m.

The next home match will be Sept. 20, as Lipscomb plays host to the Hyatt Place Select Invitational when the Bisons matchup with Appalachian State.
