MACON, Ga. - Senior defender Luke Gearin scored twice in Lipscomb's 2-0 shutout victory over Evansville on Sunday. Monday he was awarded Atlantic Sun Conference Men's Soccer Player of the Week for his efforts.
It is the first career player of the week honor for Gearin in his three years at Lipscomb.
He took just two shots in the victory but netted them both. Gearin's first came in the 45th miinute just before half on an assist from Omar Djabi. The senior's second tally of the game was on a penalty kick in the 63rd minute.
The two scores were Gearin's eighth and ninth career goals and it marked the first time in his career to record a multi-goal match.
Gearin not only showed his skill with the ball, but also his toughness on defense. He helped Lipscomb to its first shutout of the season against the Purple Aces and a 3-0 record to start the 2014 campaign, all road matches.
It is the best start for a Bison squad since becoming a member of the A-Sun.
Gearin's award marks the second consecutive week a Bison has taken home the honor, redshirt junior Matt Kerridge nabbed his first career award last week.
Lipscomb returns to action on Friday at the Rose Park to compete in the Belmont Invitational. The Bisons open with a 3:30 p.m. match Friday against Gardner-Webb, before taking on James Madison Sunday at 12:05 p.m.
