NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Lipscomb men’s soccer begins its home slate this week, hosting the 7th Annual Hyatt Place Select Lipscomb Invitational.
Lipscomb will welcome Memphis (C-USA), Belmont (Horizon) and Houston Baptist (WAC) to Music City.
In the opening game at the Lipscomb Soccer Complex the Bisons will battle HBU Wednesday Sept. 17 at 7 p.m.
On Friday Houston Baptist will take on Belmont at 5 p.m. while Lipscomb and Memphis tangle at 7:30.
The final game of the invite will be between Memphis and Belmont at 12:30 p.m. Sunday.
The Bisons return home after playing its first five matches on the road. The 4-1 record is the best start in Lipscomb’s NCAA era, earning wins over Xavier, Eastern Illinois, Evansville and Gardner-Webb.
Lipscomb suffered its first loss on Sunday at the feet of James Madison in the Belmont Invite. The Bisons took down Gardner-Webb 3-2 on Friday but JMU got a late strike in the 89th minute to capture the tournament crown with a 1-0 decision.
Redshirt junior Matt Kerridge has been a key cog in the early success for the Bisons. The midfielder, along with teammate Luke Gearin, is tied for the Atlantic Sun Conference lead in goals with three. Kerridge is also tied for the league lead in points scored, 7.
Gearin has come up big for the Bisons in the last two weeks. He scored both goals in Lipscomb’s 2-0 win over Evansville and also recorded a tally in the win over Gardner-Webb.
On Tuesday the Bisons were rated the No. 7 best team in the NSCAA/Continental Tire Southeast Region Poll.
Last week they were ranked No. 3. In the third poll of the season Lipscomb was followed by two A-Sun teams, Florida Gulf Coast (8) and North Florida (9).
SCOUTING HOUSTON BAPTIST:
Houston Baptist enters the Lipscomb Invitational at 0-1-2 following a 3-1 loss to IUPUI last weekend. Wednesday’s meeting will be the first between the two schools.
Patrick Toh leads the Huskies in scoring with two on the year. He also adds an assist for a team lead five points.
Kevin Suarez has played 310 minutes in the net for HBU. He has allowed six goals to 20 saves through three matches.
The Huskies have been outshot 47-34 coming into the event and average 11.3 shots per game.
Memphis brings a 3-1-1 record to Nashville having won three of the last four games. After opening the season with a 3-1 loss to UAB, the Tigers reeled off three consecutive decisions, including a 4-0 shutout over then-No. 15 Saint Louis.
The Tigers recorded a win over Stony Brook and a double-overtime draw with Missouri State last weekend in the SMU Invitational.
Six different Tiger players have scored a goal. Hunter Danna leads the team with two assists.
Scoring seven goals in 2014 the Tigers have the capability of scoring, outshooting its opponents 59-37 and average 14.8 shots per game.
But Memphis trails in corners kicks 21-12.
· Reece Holcombe ranks second in the A-Sun in assists with three assists. It is already a single-season high for the junior from Birmingham.
· Gearin is second on the team and tied for third in the league with six points.
· Micah Bledsoe’s .769 save percentage is third-best in the A-Sun.
· Josue Chavez scored his first goal of the season against Gardner-Webb.
· Anthony Bellini and Kyle Smith got their first-collegiate start Sunday against James Madison.
· The Last win for the Bison in the Lipscomb Invitational came in a 3-2 OT win over Oral Roberts in 2012.
Following the Lipscomb Invite the Bisons stay home for a Friday night matchup with Georgia State at 7 p.m.
