MACON, Ga. – For the third time in four weeks the Lipscomb men’s soccer team picked up the Atlantic Sun Men’s Soccer Player of the Week.
First it was Matt Kerridge, followed by Luke Gearin. On Monday it was Josue Chavez’s turn.
The junior scored two goals and was credited with an assist to help the Bisons win the Seventh Annual Hyatt Place Select Lipscomb Invitational this past weekend.
On Wednesday Lipscomb opened tournament play with a 4-1 win over Houston Baptist. Chavez helped serve up Omar Djabi for the eventual game-winner in the 23rd minute. It was Chavez’s second assist on the year and the third of his career.
It was Friday’s come-from-behind win over Memphis where Chavez made his statement.
With the Tigers taking an early 2-0 advantage Chavez and the Bisons began to get things going. Lipscomb cut the lead in half on a Jonathan Ramirez goal at the 36:28 mark.
Just four minutes later Chavez tied the game with a shot from 8-yards out.
In the 62nd minute and with the game knotted at 3-3, the Colorado native struck again, this time with the game-winner from 10-yards out.
Chavez needed just two shots to do his damage and lift Lipscomb to its second-ever Lipscomb Invite tournament crown.
Now with three goals this season, Chavez is tied for fourth in the A-Sun.
The player of the week honor is the first of Chavez’s career.
