Men's soccer set for semifinal action of A-Sun Tournament

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – For the first time in school history the Lipscomb men’s soccer team will take the pitch as the Atlantic Sun Conference champion and the No. 1 seed in the A-Sun Tournament.

The Bisons quest for a championship begins Friday at 7 p.m. when the fourth-seeded Ospreys of North Florida ventures to the Lipscomb Soccer Complex for a semifinal battle.

Lipscomb (12-3-1, 4-1-1 in the A-Sun) will be making its eighth consecutive appearance in the tournament. That is the longest active streak in the A-Sun.

The Purple and Gold will bring plenty of hardware into the matchup after claiming nine all-conference honors Monday, including Luke Gearin winning Defensive Player of the Year and Ivan Alvarado winning Freshman of the Year.

Redshirt junior Matt Kerridge joins Gearin and Alvarado on the first team All-Conference, while freshman goalkeeper Nate Davis and junior Reece Holcombe earned a spot on the second team.

Also Alvarado and Davis brought home All-Freshman accolades.

Lipscomb handed UNF (7-6-1, 3-2-1) a 1-0 loss in the previous meeting (Oct. 18) this season in Jacksonville. Holcombe delivered a 56th-minute dagger past the A-Sun Goalkeeper of the Year, Kyle Nasta, to grab a key road victory in league play.

Along with Nasta, UNF placed Diogo Quirino and Helge Pietschmann on the first team while Alex Morrell and Jay Bolt earned a spot on the second team.

The Ospreys are led offensively by Simen Solstad’s six goals. He is second on the team with 13 total points.

Pietschmann netted five scores and assisted a team high four times. Morrell also has four assists.

Nasta has a 7-6-1 record in net after logging 798 minutes in nine matches. He has allowed only 11 goals this season to 83 shots faced. He recorded his fifth shutout in the quarterfinal win over No. 5 USC Upstate.

  • Gearin finished second in the A-Sun with eight goals. Just one behind the leader.
  • His 16 total points are tied with Alvarado for fourth in the league.
  • Kerridge has seven goals and three assists. He ranks third in the A-Sun with 17 points.
  • Davis enters the match 10-1-1 between the pipes. He ranks third in the league with a .722 save percentage and a 1.18 goals against average.
  • Alvarado finished second in the conference with eight assists.
  • He has scored and dished an assist in three of the last four matches.
