Road trip to Mercer next up for Men's Soccer

MACON, Ga. – The Lipscomb Men’s Soccer team will return to the pitch at 6 p.m. on Saturday to take on a familiar foe in Mercer at Bear Field in nonconference action.

The Bears, a charter member of the Atlantic Sun Conference dating back to 1978, fled its 35-year home  to become a member of the Southern Conference in 2014.

The matchup between the old A-Sun foes will mark the 16th meeting in the all-time series with Mercer leading 3-10-2. Live stats will be available HERE.

Lipscomb (2-4-1) will look to carry some momentum from its 1-0 win over IUPUI in the Lipscomb Invitational last weekend. The win came two days after earning a hard-fought, 2-2, draw with Georgia Southern behind Logan Paynter’s two scores.

Junior keeper Micah Bledsoe was named the A-Sun’s Defensive Player of the Week after recording his eighth-career clean sheet in the win over the Jaguars. It is the second time this season he has been given the honor.

The Bears, winners in four of their last five games, will enter Friday night 4-3 overall and riding a two-game win streak. The meeting will be just the second home match of the season for Mercer after opening its home slate last Friday with 2-0 victory over Presbyterian.

Senior forward Jourdan Gooden and junior midfielder Connor Antley, each with two goals, lead a balanced offensive attack for a team that has scored 10 goals on 10 assists. Gooden and sophomore forward Will Bagrou are tops on the squad with two assists.

Bagrou has fired a team-high 14 shots this season, placing just two on frame, while freshman Kobe Perez has been on target with seven of his 13 attempts.

Jeremy Booth has proved to be one of the top goalies in the country this season. The junior has three shutouts in his last four matches and ranks 34th in the nation with a 0.43 shutout percentage. He has allowed 10 goals while playing all 630 minutes between the pipes.

Booth’s 33 saves are the 18th-most in the nation and his 4.71 saves per game rank 29th

  • Bledsoe is second in the A-Sun with 30 saves. His .714 save percentage and 1.61 goals against average ranks third.
  • Paynter’s team-high three goals are the fourth-most in the league. All three of his scores have come in the last four matches.
  • Preseason All-Conference selections Matt Kerridge and Ivan Alvarado are second on the squad with two goals each.
  • Kevin McMahon is tied for third in the conference with two assists.
  • Lipscomb has fired the third most shots in the league this season with 83.
  • The Bisons’ 40 corner kicks are a conference best.

Lipscomb continues its two-game road swing on Wednesday (Sept. 30) when it travels to USC Upstate to open up Atlantic Sun Conference play. The match is scheduled to begin at 6 p.m. CT.
