Men's Soccer makes history in first NSCAA rankings of 2016

KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Just one week into the 2016 season the Lipscomb men’s soccer team is already getting some love in the polls, both regionally and nationally.

On Tuesday the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) ranked the Bisons No. 3 in the Division I Southeast Region Poll after opening the season 2-0 with wins over Florida Atlantic and Western Illinois last weekend. It marks the highest Lipscomb has ever climbed in the regional rankings after peaking at No. 4 in 2014.

The Bisons were joined by North Florida (No. 6) and Stetson (No. 7) as the only ASUN programs to make the regional list.

UNF finished the week with a 3-0 win over Winthrop and a 2-2 draw with North Carolina-Greensboro, while Stetson took down VCU, 2-1, and played Old Dominion to a 1-1 stalemate.

Lipscomb’s hot start also attracted the attention of coaches around the country and earned a program-best five votes in the NSCAA Top 25 Poll, making it just the second time in history the Bisons have been recognized.

In 2014 the Purple and Gold received a lone tally after winning three consecutive road matches to open the season.

Sophomore forward Logan Paynter led the way for the Bisons scoring three goals and tallying an assist while earning his first career ASUN Player of the Week honor.

Preseason ASUN Goalkeeper of the Year Micah Bledsoe earned two clean sheets in the process, pushing his career total to 12. He came away with four saves in the season opener and only faced one shot from Western Illinois thanks to a stout defensive effort.

Lipscomb returns to the pitch this Friday when it travels to Atlanta to face off with Georgia State in a 6:30 p.m. tilt.
