Men's Soccer earns No. 3 seed after drawing #20 FGCU 1-1

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Playing in front of the home crowd on senior night, the Lipscomb men’s soccer team battled No. 20 Florida Gulf Coast to a 1-1 draw Saturday night at the Lipscomb Soccer Complex in ASUN Conference action.

With the draw, Lipscomb was rewarded the No. 3 seed in next week’s ASUN Championship and will travel to Fort Myers, Florida for a first round match with No. 6 Stetson on Thursday.

Lipscomb (9-5-2, 3-2-1 ASUN) outplayed FGCU (12-3-2, 4-1-1) for most of the match, just missing on numerous opportunities, but it was the Eagles who jumped on the scoreboard first off a corner kick just before halftime.

“I am really, really proud of the way our guys battled back after going down late in the first half,” Lipscomb head coach Charles Morrow said. “But I thought they deserved better after creating as many chances as we did.

“The second goal never came, but it felt like it was coming at any time.”

Playing their final match at home this season, the Bisons came out of the break inspired and quickly found an equalizer when junior Joe Kerridge struck a rocket for his first score of the season.

Both squads found their backlines under attack for much of the first half, leading to five saves from Lipscomb keeper Christopher Zappia and four for FGCU’s Jared Brown.

Facing the nation’s most lethal offensive attack, the Lipscomb defense settled down and held the Eagles without an attempt in the final 45 minutes of regulation.

One of the best looks of the night came in the waning seconds of the first overtime when junior Ivan Alvarado hit a beautiful free kick from just outside the 18-yard box, but FGCU’s Brown made a spectacular diving stop to send the shot over the crossbar.

“I can’t say enough about the character and fight we showed,” Morrow said. “I wish it was a different result.”

Lipscomb honored its five seniors: Troy Barr, Daniel Vieira, Josue Chavez, Shpend Rexhepi and Micah Bledsoe in a brief ceremony before the match as it was their last game in Nashville.

41’ – FGCU: After the Eagles and Bisons played back-and-forth for most of the first half, FGCU soared into the scoring column when Kamar Marriott headed in a corner kick off the foot of freshman Miguel Perez. The goal was Marriott’s first of the season.

52’ – LIPSCOMB: After FGCU cleared a ball from in front of its net Kerridge found himself all by himself along the home sideline. After making a run towards the goal, Kerridge rocketed a line-drive, 30-yard shot that curved just inside the right post.

  • Lipscomb trails in the all-time series with FGCU 7-3-1.
  • The Bisons outshot FGCU 16-11 overall while both teams placed eight on frame.
  • The Bisons attempted 12 corner kicks, compared to eight for the Eagles.
  • Ivan Alvarado led all players with six shot attempts. He placed four on target.
  • Zappia made a career high seven saves after stepping in for Bledsoe in goal.
  • FGCU’s Albert Ruiz, the nation’s leading scorer, did not get in the scoring column, but he did lead the Eagles with four shots – all on target.

The Bisons will travel to Fort Myers, Florida for the opening round of the ASUN Championship where they will face No. 6 Stetson on Thursday, November 3. A game time will be determined at a later date.
