LAKEPOINTE, Ga. – The men’s soccer team was well represented when the ASUN Conference handed out its preseason accolades this week. Seniors Joe Kerridge and Ivan Alvarado and junior Logan Paynter were named to the Preseason All-ASUN team.
"It's awesome having three guys recognized, and they are certainly deserving," head coach Charles Morrow said. "Getting three on the team sort of indicates we are expected to be in that top group of ASUN teams, which is a reflection on the whole team."
Kerridge, Alvarado and Paynter were all honored at the end of last season as First Team All-Conference members, and the trio were also named to the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) All-Southeast Region Second-Team.
"I think we are pretty evenly balanced, and I think that equates into getting the results we need to get." Morrow said. "This year we are deeper than we have ever been and having three preseason All-Conference guys leading the way is great."
For Kerridge, the honor comes from not only what he did as a defender for the Bisons last season, but also the hot offensive streak he finished the year on. He was a part of a defensive core that allowed a meager 22 goals on the season and completed six shutouts. Offensively, he scored twice in the final three games of the season and was the only defender for Lipscomb with multiple goals.
Alvarado was a significant member of the Bisons midfield last season and tied for the team lead with four assists. While the dynamic playmaker only struck the net once, he was a constant threat firing 18 of his 30 shots on net, the third-most on the squad.
Paynter, as a sophomore, showed as one of the best true scorers in the ASUN. He finished tied for second in the league with 11 goals, and added four assists. His 26 total points led the Bisons and put Paynter third in the ASUN. He played in all 18 games logging the third-most minutes on the team.
"I see these honors as certainly a reflection on the group," Morrow said. "I think we have other guys who are just as deserving, and I think that speaks to our group mentality."
For the three Lipscomb honorees, the preseason honors are not the first they have received. All three were named to the Preseason All-ASUN team last season, and for Alvarado, this marks the third consecutive preseason honor.
As a team, the Bisons were picked to finish third in the conference behind predicted champions FGCU and runners-up North Florida. Lipscomb tallied 35 voting points, trailing North Florida by just one.
"I think third is fair based on where we finished last year," Morrow said. "I would expect FGCU to be strong again and North Florida is going to be up there again too. I think if the top three played each other 10 times, I think the wins and losses would be evenly distributed."
The Bisons will continue their exhibition schedule this Saturday, Aug. 19 against Cincinnati at home. The match will begin at 7:00pm and is free to all fans.
