NASHVILLE, Tenn. – The first road test of the season for the Lipscomb men’s soccer team will be a challenging one as the Bisons travel down to Tampa, Fla. for a date with South Florida.
While the Bisons (1-0) opened their season with a win on Friday night, the Bulls begin their 2017 campaign with Monday night’s game. USF did emerge victorious in all three of its preseason matchups.
This will be the first time the Bisons and Bulls have locked horns; however, one face on the opposing bench will be very familiar. USF head coach Bob Butehorn is in his first season in Tampa after spending the previous five seasons right down I-75 in Ft. Myers as the head coach of FGCU.
Butehorn got the better of Lipscomb while at FGCU taking wins in four of the seven matchups during his tenure including a 3-2 victory in 2OT in the ASUN Semifinals last season.
SCOUTING SOUTH FLORIDA
Butehorn will look to build on the success South Florida had last season as the Bulls won the American Athletic Conference regular season crown before falling in penalties in the AAC Final. The Bulls received an at-large bid to the NCAA Tournament after finishing the year in the top 30 in NCAA RPI but lost in the first round to FGCU. It was the eighth NCAA Tournament appearance for USF in the last nine seasons.
The Bulls return just 11 players from last year’s squad and only one of their top five scorers from 2016. One of the biggest losses may be keeper Spasoje Stefanovich, who garnered AAC Goalkeeper of the Year honors a season ago.
Some Bulls returners to look out for include midfielder Ricardo Gomes who was honored on the AAC Preseason All-Conference Team after posting five assists last season. Returning scorer Luis Garza posted three goals and an assist in 2016.
- Lipscomb and South Florida have never faced off. The Bulls will be the second AAC team the Bisons have played this fall after Lipscomb beat Cincinnati 3-1 in the preseason.
- Bisons senior midfielder Ivan Alvarado will have a chance to break Lipscomb’s career assist record in Monday night’s game. He currently is tied with Miguel de Silva at the top of the record books with 17 career assists.
- This will be the first of three road trips to Florida the Bisons will have to make it 2017. They will make separate roadtrips in for games against Stetson on Sept. 27 and FGCU Oct. 7.
The Bisons will be back at the Lipscomb Soccer Complex on Saturday night to face SIU-Edwardsville at 7:00pm.
