LAKEPOINTE, Ga. – A week full of firsts continues for Lipscomb freshman Ben Locke as the defender was awarded the ASUN men’s soccer Defensive Player of the Week for his performance against Niagara in the Bisons season opener.
Locke scored his first goal in his first collegiate game on Friday night which contributed to Lipscomb beating Niagara 3-2. He also played all 90 minutes on the backline for the Bisons securing the victory.
For Locke, Friday night’s game was a culmination of more than two years of trying to get on the pitch as a collegiate student-athlete. After signing with North Carolina St. out of high school, Locke suffered injuries which caused him to redshirt each of his two years as a member of the Wolfpack.
Still classified as a freshman because of the redshirts, Locke transferred to Lipscomb hoping for a fresh start and a chance to finally see the field. He made his opportunity count as his first shot as a Bison deflected just inside the post to give Lipscomb the 1-0 lead in Friday’s game.
With the goal, Locke is one of two defenders in the ASUN with a goal so far.
Locke and the Bisons will hit the road for their next game on Monday night at 6:00pm to take on South Florida. The game will be broadcast on Facebook Live.
