NASHVILLE, Tenn. – The Lipscomb men’s soccer team will look to replicate one of its best wins from the 2016 season when the Bisons (1-1) play host to SIU-Edwardsville (0-2) on Saturday night.
Last year, the Bisons took down SIUE on the road 1-0 thanks to a late double overtime goal from Ivan Sakou. The Cougars were able to rebound from that loss and eventually advanced to the NCAA Quarterfinals as one of the last 16 teams remaining in the tournament.
The game will be available via live stats. Kick off will be at 7:00pm.
The Bisons and Cougars have met twice previously on the pitch with each team winning one game. SIUE won the first match up on its home pitch 3-2 in 2011. As previously mentioned, the Bisons emerged victorious in the second meeting with a 1-0 2OT win.
Coming off the program’s Sweet 16 finish, SIUE men’s soccer changed conferences before the start of the 2017 season, leaving the Missouri Valley for the Mid-American Conference.
The Cougars are coached by Mario Sanchez, who is returning for his third season. Sanchez came to SIUE from Louisville where he was an assistant coach.
Some context for SIUE’s 0-2 start to its 2017 campaign can be found in its opponents. The Cougars began the year falling to No. 22 Michigan St. 1-0 before losing on a last-minute goal to No. 8 Syracuse 2-1.
Neither of SIUE’s top two goal scorers from last season return this year, but starting goalie Kyle Dal Santo, an All-West Region honoree, returns in net. Dal Santo posted a .838 save percentage last season, which was ninth-best in the nation. He recorded nine shutouts last year giving him 20 for his SIUE career.
The Cougars were selected to finish second the MAC Preseason Poll behind last year’s champion and tournament champion Akron.
- Lipscomb senior Ivan Alvarado is one assist shy of setting the program’s all-time record in career assists. He currently sits at 17, tied with Miguel de Silva (2007-2010) at the top.
- After starting the season 1-0, Lipscomb entered the USC Southeast Region poll ranked eighth. They are one of two ASUN teams in the poll with NJIT ranked tenth.
- Freshman defender Ben Locke earned the first ASUN Defensive Player of the Week award of the 2017 season with his play in the Bisons win over Niagara. Locke recorded his first collegiate goal in the game.
- The Bisons are one of only three teams in the ASUN with a win so far this season. NJIT is the only undefeated team at 2-0. Lipscomb and North Florida are 1-1. FGCU, Stetson, Jacksonville, and USC Upstate are winless.
Lipscomb will take the field next on Tuesday night after the Labor Day weekend on the road against ETSU at 6:00pm.
