NASHVILLE, Tenn. – A goal by Logan Paynter with less than five minutes remaining on the clock provided the dramatics the Lipscomb men's soccer team (2-1) needed to stay undefeated at home with a 2-1 win over SIU-Edwardsville (0-3) on Saturday night at the Lipscomb Soccer Complex.
“This was a huge, huge response after a poor outing at South Florida,” said head coach Charles Morrow. “I think it should do a lot for our confidence and building belief moving forward.”
While the first half contained few quality scoring chances, the Bisons controlled the ball most of the opening frame and secured five set pieces from the corner flag to the Cougars one.
Building on the momentum created in the first half, Lipscomb came out of break with pace and finally got on the board courtesy of senior Ivan Sakou. It was Sakou who last year broke the hearts of SIUE fans when he scored in the final two minutes of a 2OT Lipscomb win in Edwardsville.
“I liked Ivan’s energy and that he took coaching points at halftime,” Morrow said. “Once you start driving it creates problems and opens up pockets for other guys.”
Sakou’s fellow frontman, Paynter, agreed with his head coach’s assessment of the Cameroonian striker’s play.
“He’s a beast,” said Paynter. “He makes it difficult for the defenders every second of the game. While he is doing that, it frees up space for other guys in behind him like me and Ivan [Alvarado]. He got the reward tonight and got a great goal out of it.”
Less than ten minutes later Paynter scored what most thought was a good goal off a rebound to give the Bisons a 2-0 lead, but the assistant referee had his flag up indicating offside, disallowing the goal.
At the 80-minute mark, it appeared Sakou would again be the hero of SIUE-Lipscomb matchup, but with less than nine minutes remaining, Jorge Gonzalez evened the score via a header.
However, another overtime thriller in the series wasn’t meant to be as Paynter sealed the Bisons victory with a header of his own off a feed from senior Joe Kerridge. For Paynter, it was his first goal on the season after leading the Bisons with 11 last year.
“It’s always great to get the first one,” said Paynter. “It’s the hardest one to get out of the way. When you score one that gets disallowed, you just have to be positive. Eventually it came. I’m so happy.”
The win is an important one for the Bisons as SIUE came into the season with a top-50 RPI and a Sweet 16 appearance in 2016. While the loss drops the Cougars to 0-3, Morrow understands the magnitude of the victory.
“The result is huge.” Morrow said. “SIUE might be the best 0-3 team in the country. They’re very difficult to play against. We knew it would take a huge effort. We battled when we needed to battle.”
53’ – Ivan Sakou took a cross from Logan Paynter at his feet and hesitated a second to settle the ball. He then slotted it home from 10 yards out to open the scoring.
82’ – Jorge Gonzalez answered with a header in the box on an assist from Eric Tejada. It was Gonzalez’s first of the season.
86’ – Logan Paynter decided the match by matching Gonzalez’s header with one of his own on a feed from Joe Kerridge. Paynter first of the season came from just outside the six yard box and hit the left side of the net for the win.
- Paynter’s 3 point night (1 goal, 1 assist) gives him eight such games in his Lipscomb career. His career high in points is 4 set twice last season: 2 goals in a 3-0 win over Western Ill. and 2 goals in a 2-1 win over USC Upstate.
- Bisons starting goalkeeper Chris Zappia recorded a career high nine saves against SIUE. His previous high was seven against FGCU on Oct. 29, 2016.
- Joe Kerridge’s assist on Paynter’s goal is the fifth of his career at Lipscomb. He has now had at least one assist in each his four seasons.
The Bisons hit the road for another midweek game. On Tuesday, Lipscomb will take on ETSU in Johnson City, Tenn at 6 p.m. The game will be streamed live and live stats are available.
