Bisons and Bucs Renew Rivalry After 3-Year Men's Soccer Hiatus

NASHVILLE, Tenn. –  Following the Labor Day weekend, the Lipscomb men’s soccer team (2-1) will head to the Smoky Mountains to play former ASUN rival ETSU (0-1-1) on Tuesday night at 7 p.m. in its second road tilt of the young season.

The Buccaneers will be the second consecutive NCAA Tournament team for the Bisons as ETSU comes off a historic season.  Before falling in the SoCon Tournament championship game, the Bucs won the regular season crown in addition to beat then-No. 1 North Carolina en route to a 12-win season.

With their NCAA Tournament fate left up to the committee, the Bucs secured the program’s first-ever at-large bid to the 48-team tournament before falling in the opening round to Virginia Tech 1-0.

You can follow the game via live stats here.

This will be the first meeting between the Bucs and Bisons outside of ASUN play in the Div. I era. The two were conference rivals from 2008-2013, meeting nine times. ETSU holds the series record 2-6-1.

The last time the two schools played was the 2013 ASUN Semifinals where the Bucs got the better of Lipscomb 1-0. ETSU went on to win the ASUN Tournament securing an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament.

After their historic season and program’s third trip to the NCAA Tournament, the Bucs look primed to make another run. Finishing last year 33rd in NCAA RPI, the Bucs were picked by the SoCon coaches to again win the conference, receiving four of five possible first-place votes.

The Bucs return their leading scorer from last season, Fletcher Ekern, who netted nine goals, three of which were game winners. Forwaerd Cameron Woodfin also returns for the Bucs after leading the NCAA with twelve assists last season. In all, ETSU secured five members of the 11 on the Preseason All-SoCon team.

One of those All-SoCon picks, junior keeper Jonny Sutherland, has started both games for ETSU this season, allowing three goals and making eight saves.

  • Two members of the current Lipscomb squad, Scout Monteith and Cam Botes, were a part of the 2013 team that last faced ETSU. Both played all 200 possible minutes against them that season.
  • Lipscomb senior Ivan Alvarado is one assist shy of setting the program’s all-time record in career assists. He currently sits at 17, tied with Miguel de Silva (2007-2010) at the top.
  • Junior keeper Chris Zappia is coming off his best performance of the season after locking down a win on Saturday against SIU-Edwardsville. Zappia allowed just one goal, making a career-high nine saves.
  • The Bisons are currently sit second in the ASUN behind undefeated NJIT who is 3-0-1 on the season.

Lipscomb will be back at home on Saturday night as they play Georgia St. at 7 p.m. It will be the Bisons last home game for a while as they then embark on a 4-game road trip from Sept. 15-27.
