NASHVILLE, Tenn. – After consecutive golden goal victories for the Lipscomb men’s soccer team, the Bisons will try to make it three wins in a row against UC Irvine on Monday night at 9 p.m. in the outskirts of Los Angeles.
Friday night in San Diego, the hero was Ivan Sakou who scored both the game-tying and game-winning goals, the later coming in double overtime. The previous game at home Logan Paynter scored headed in an overtime winner against Georgia St.
UC Irvine comes into the match up with results in four of the last five matches including a win over No. 8 Denver on a neutral field earlier this month. That win, coupled with the Anteaters other results, earned the SoCal team a No. 23 ranking from TopDrawerSoccer.com.
While the game will not be broadcast, live stats will be available here on Monday night.
This will be the first meeting between the schools.
SCOUTING UC IRVINE
A member of the Big West Conference, the Anteaters have had a surprising start to their season with a 3-2-1 record.
Irvine was picked to finish last in the South division of the Big West after a 5-13-1 record in 2016. But that win over Denver, alongside a draw against Penn St., have given the Anteaters a measure of national respect.
UCI boasts one of the best offenses in the nation with 11 goals and 13 assists. Those stats are both rank in the top-25 nationally. Leading scorer Ivan Canales has three of those scores for the Anteaters including two game winning goals.
Two different goalies have split time for Irvine this season. Alex Waldron has started four games and has earned two wins and a shutout. Greg Patenaude has contributed a win in his two starts.
- UC Irvine has five NCAA Tournament trips in their program’s history, the last coming in 2014 when the Anteaters made the Sweet 16.
- One notable alumni of the Irvine soccer program is Brad Evans. Evans is the all-time leading scorer in Anteater history with 31 goals in four years. Evans has 27 caps with the U.S. Men’s National Team including appearing in the multiple Gold Cup games.
- Bisons junior Logan Paynter currently ranks tied for 22nd in the nation with 4 four goals this season.
- Lipscomb will look to extend its win streak to three on Monday night. The last time the Purple and Gold won four straight was Oct. 8-Oct. 25 in 2016.
The Bisons will begin ASUN Conference play with a road trip to USC Upstate on Saturday at 6 p.m.
