NASHVILLE, Tenn. – After securing three points to open up ASUN Conference play on Saturday, the Lipscomb men’s soccer team will stay on the road to play Stetson on Wednesday night at 6 p.m. in Deland, Fla.
The match will be the finale of a season-long four-game road trip for the Bisons, who with a win will vault to the top of the ASUN standings. The Bisons and Hatters will be the only midweek ASUN action this week.
Wednesday night will be the second road ASUN match of the season for Lipscomb, who will have three of their final four conference matches at the friendly confines of the Lipscomb Soccer Complex.
Lipscomb and Stetson have met 16 times dating back to 2003 including once in postseason play (2016). The Hatters lead the all -time series 8-5-2, however the Bisons have won the last three meetings all via shutout.
Last year, Lipscomb won the regular season meeting 2-0 before shutting out Stetson in the ASUN quarterfinals 3-0. The scoreless streak for the Hatters against Lipscomb has reached 271 minutes.
The Hatters enter the match with an identical 1-0 ASUN record to the Bisons after a big road win over North Florida on Saturday. Junior defender Ian McCauley headed home the game winner in the 85th minute to give Stetson the 1-0 victory.
Overall, the Hatters are 3-4 on the season, but have won three of their last five matches after an 0-2 start.
Stetson ranks tied for 6th in the ASUN with eight goals in seven matches and has allowed an average of 1.53 goals per match, the third-lowest in the ASUN.
Leading scorers, freshman Deniz Dogan and sophomore Finn Busmann, both have two goals and one assist so far this year.
Keeper Joseph Melong has been in net for all three wins this year and has recorded both of the Hatters shutouts. He is second in the ASUN with a .750 save pct.
- The Lipscomb men’s soccer program has never started 2-0 in ASUN play.
- Bisons forward Logan Paynter moved into third place all-time on the Lipscomb career goals chart with his 7th minute goal on Saturday at Upstate. He now has 22 for his career and trails Garret Pettis (33) and Miguel DaSilva (32).
- With his three game-winning goals this season, Paynter is tied for fourth in the NCAA in winners this season.
- Kyle Smith leads the ASUN with four assists this season, with all four coming in the last three games. In his previous 47 games, Smith had never recorded an assist.
The Bisons will return home for what could be the biggest game of the season when they take on NJIT on Saturday at 7 p.m.
