NASHVILLE, Tenn. – A match that might decide the top seed in the ASUN Conference men’s soccer tournament is set for Saturday night at the Lipscomb Soccer Complex between Lipscomb (5-4, 1-1) and NJIT (6-2-2, 2-0) at 7 p.m.
The two programs find themselves atop most ASUN stat categories and are the only two sides with winning records in the conference. Both have been consistently ranked in the United Soccer Coaches Southeast Region poll.
Highlanders and Bisons make up four of the top five scorers in the ASUN and the top two goalies in terms of saves made.
It’ll be the first home match for the Bisons in three weeks after a four-game road trip concluded with an overtime loss to Stetson on Wednesday night.
Nashville SC will be at the match on Saturday supporting the Bisons and will have a tent set up so fans can learn more about Nashville’s newest pro soccer club. Saturday’s match will be broadcast on Facebook Live and live stats will be available.
The sides have only played once, last season at NJIT. Four first half goals propelled the Bisons in that match to a 4-1 win against the Highlanders.
The Highlanders offense is potent, led by the nation’s leading scorer Mamadou Guirassy who has already potted 10 goals on the campaign. Guirassy has 10 of the 14 goals for the Highlanders and has pitched in two assists as well. He’s taken 46 shots with 26 coming on net. The Frenchman also leads the nation in game winners this season with four.
Sophomore keeper Victor Pujardes has earned almost as many accolades as his teammate. Pujardes leads the ASUN in save pct. at .860 and saves with 42. Nationally, Pujardes ranks eighth in save pct.
- With Ryan Birchfield’s goal in Wednesday’s loss to Stetson, seven different Bisons have now gotten into the scoring column.
- Saturday’s match will be the first of three at the Lipscomb Soccer Complex against ASUN opponents, North Florida and Jacksonville will also make trips to Nashville to play the Bisons.
- The Bisons still sit atop the ASUN in shots per match at 13.1.
- There will be free pizza for students at the match.
