ASUN rival awaits men's soccer on Saturday

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – In a season full of ups and downs, the Lipscomb men’s soccer team is looking to reverse its fortunes on Saturday night against one of the best programs in the ASUN Conference, FGCU.

Back to back ASUN losses have dampened a 1-0 start to the conference season for the Bisons. First it was a 2-1 overtime loss on the road to Stetson in match where the Bisons out-chanced the Hatters. Then last Saturday at home against NJIT, Lipscomb dominated all aspects of the match but the scoreboard and lost 1-0.

Saturday night’s match will be broadcast on Facebook Live and live stats will also be available.

While getting back on track is sure to be at the forefront of the Bisons minds, a matter of revenge might be sprinkled in as well. The Eagles ended Lipscomb’s season in the ASUN Semifinals last year with an overtime winner. That came after a 1-1 draw in the regular season.

Overall, FGCU holds the series lead at 8-3-1.

A stumble out of the gate by the Eagles has turned completely around in the last five games. FGCU is 4-0-1 in the last five with four consecutive victories. The team from the beach is 2-0-0 in the ASUN and is coming off an impressive non-conference victory against No. 24 Omaha.

The game against Omaha was more than just a season-bolstering win, it also marked the return of dynamo forward Albert Ruiz from injury. A year ago, Ruiz led the nation in goals in 2016 with a staggering 22 and scored his first this year on Tuesday.

In the absence of Ruiz, Robert Ferrer, Shak Adams and Preston Kilwein have stepped up, each potting three goals to lead the Eagles. The keeper, Connor Gavigan has also shown well with a .759 save pct. allowing just 0.97 goals per match.

FGCU’s recent run of play, coupled with Ruiz’s return, make the Eagles a dangerous opponent on Saturday night.

  • The Bisons will look to avoid back-to-back shutout losses on Saturday night. The last time the Purple and Gold posted two consecutive goose eggs was Oct. 1 & 5, 2016.
  • FGCU and Lipscomb boast six of the nine top scorers in the ASUN between the clubs.
  • The two sides also rank first and second in the conference in goals per match with the Eagles leading the way at 1.78 while Lipscomb sits at 1.60.
  • The Eagles and Bisons shoot a lot and each team has made its shots count. FGCU has converted on 14.8% of its shots while Lipscomb has converted at an 11.9% clip. The two numbers rank first and second in the conference.
