NASHVILLE, Tenn. – It has been 188 minutes and 56 seconds since the Lipscomb men’s soccer team last scored a goal. On Wednesday night at 7 p.m. against Memphis, the Bisons will try to solve their offensive woes in a non-conference match against their in-state rivals.
The last goal scored for Lipscomb came in the 89’ minute against Stetson to knot the game at 1-1, a match the Hatters would go on to win in overtime. The Bisons have since dropped back-to-back shutout losses and in the process moved to 1-3 in the ASUN.
The Bisons and Tigers have met seven previous times with the Tigers holding a 6-1 advantage in the series. Last season the Tigers got a goal in each half to beat the Bisons 2-0 in Nashville.
Lipscomb’s only win in the series came in 2014. In one of the most dramatic matches ever at the Lipscomb Soccer Complex, Lipscomb overcame a two-goal first half deficit to win 4-3. Current senior Jonathan Ramirez scored the first goal of the match for the Bisons and added an assist on the game tying goal. Senior Ivan Alvarado assisted on the game-winner.
The Tigers sit at 2-5-3 but are 1-1-1 in American Athletic Conference play. Picked last in the AAC preseason poll, Memphis boasts just 10 upperclassmen on its 26-man roster.
Memphis has scored just eight goals in 10 games this season, and sophomore defender Ben Roberts is the only Tiger with multiple goals.
Redshirt senior goalkeeper Jake Leeker has manned the net for every minute of the 2017 Memphis campaign. He has allowed 14 goals and has a save pct. of .731. Leeker has earned one shutout this season, a 0-0 draw against Belmont in the Tigers season opener.
- The Bisons will be looking to avoid their third consecutive shutout. The last time Lipscomb was shutout in three consecutive matches was 2007.
- It’s the first non-conference match for the Bisons since Sept. 18 against UC Irvine.
- Redshirt junior Logan Paynter needs just five points to move into the top three in program history in points. He currently sits at 51.
The Bisons will continue their ASUN schedule on Saturday at home when they take on North Florida at 7 p.m.
