Men's Soccer Puts Three Game Win Streak on Line at Kentucky

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Riding a three-game win streak and a load of confidence, the Lipscomb men’s soccer team will be put to the test against one of the best teams in the region on Saturday night. The Bisons will make the drive up to Lexington to play Kentucky, currently ranked 5th in the United Soccer Coaches Southeast Region Poll.

The match between the Bisons (7-6) and the Wildcats (7-4-2) will be broadcast on SEC Network+Live stats will also be available.

Kentucky and Lipscomb have met just once when it counts in men’s soccer. Last season the two teams met in September and played to a 1-1 draw. At the time, the Wildcats were ranked 20th in the nation.

In that match, keeper Chris Zappia made his second career start and delivered in a big way, making six saves while holding the ‘Cats to just one goal.

While many sports fans in the South know Kentucky as an SEC school, in men’s soccer the Wildcats play in Conference USA. The ‘Cats were picked to finish in fourth in CUSA one year after advancing to the second round in the NCAA Tournament.

Kentucky started the season hot, going 6-1-2 in its first nine games. The last two weeks have been a different story for the Wildcats as Kentucky has lost three of its last four matches. \

Statistically, the Wildcats are led by Stefan Stojkovic and JJ Williams. Stojkovic leads the side in goals with three this year, while Williams has scored twice and has added three assists.

In net, Enrique Facusse has established himself as one of the nation’s best keepers. The Honduran ranks 24th in the country in save pct. at .808. He’s pitched six shutouts this season as a freshman and has played every minute for the Wildcats.

Although the Bisons will be in non-conference action this weekend, the other six ASUN schools will play each other. The one game to keep an eye on will be the FGCU at USC Upstate contest on Saturday night at 6 p.m. A USC Upstate loss or draw will clinch a tournament spot for Lipscomb.

When it comes to tournament seeding, the Bisons can do no better than the fourth seed.

  • Logan Paynter is three points away from moving into a tie at 3rd among Lipscomb’s all-time points leaders. He has 53 poinst for his career.
  • Lipscomb head coach Charles Morrow currently sits at 98 career wins at Lipscomb.
  • The Bisons’ RPI is 76. They own the second-highest RPI in the ASUN. FGCU is at 71.
  • Lipscomb’s high powered offense has steadily made its way up the national ranks. The Bisons 14.1 shots per game rank 38th in the nation while their 24 total goals is the 37th best mark.
  • Chris Zappia’s 56 saves are the 30th best mark nationally.

Lipscomb will play its final nonconference match of the season on Tuesday night at 7 p.m. at UAB.
