NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Four straight wins featuring 11 goals and stout goalkeeping have left the Lipscomb men’s soccer team with a swagger heading into the final games of the 2017 season.
The Bisons are the hottest team in the ASUN coming off massive RPI building wins against Evansville and Kentucky. Sitting at 54 in the latest NCAA men’s soccer RPI poll, the Bisons continue to vault themselves up the national rankings.
To continue their torrid stretch, the Bisons will go on the road on Tuesday night to take on another high RPI team, UAB. The Blazers rank behind the Bisons in 74th, but will present another top-100 RPI win to add to Lipscomb already impressive resume.
The match will be at 7 p.m. and will be broadcast on CUSA TV. Live stats will also be available.
UAB owns the all-time series lead 3-1, but Lipscomb won last year’s meeting 1-0 at the Lipscomb Soccer Complex. In the win, Ivan Sakou scored the winner, with assists coming from Logan Paynter and John Wynia.
SCOUTING THE BLAZERS
The Blazers have had an up and down season, but like Lipscomb, seem to be getting hot at the right time. Having won three of its last four games, UAB has steadied the ship after an 0-4-1 strecth in the middle of the season.
This will be the final nonconference game for both teams as Lipscomb has one ASUN game remaining while UAB has two C-USA games left.
Massimo Ferrin has been the primary offensive threat for the Blazers. The sophomore forward has five goals and 11 points to lead the squad in both categories.
The bulk of the starts in net have gone to redshirt freshman goalie James Teal who has excelled at the position. Teal has allowed just 15 goals in 13 games and sports a save pct. of .786. The save pct. ranks third in C-USA.
ASUN TOURNAMENT UPDATE
The Bisons have locked up a spot in the ASUN Championship. While seeding is still to be determined, Lipscomb appears destined to be the No. 4 or 5 seed and play at Stetson. A loss or draw by North Florida on Wednesday at Jacksonville will lock in the Bisons to play in the 4/5 game.
If it comes down to Saturday, the Bisons can lock up the No. 4 seed with a win.
- Bisons head coach Charles Morrow is on the verge of history as he sits on 99 wins in his Lipscomb career.
- Averaging almost seven corner kicks per game, the Bisons rank 10th nationally in those set pieces.
- Discipline has been a key for Lipscomb this year as the Bisons 9.60 fouls per game and rank 13th
- Lipscomb has the 35th best scoring offense with 1.80 goals per game and ranks 28th nationally with 27 total goals.
The Bisons will celebrate Senior Night on Saturday in their season finale against Jacksonville at 7 p.m.
