MACON, Ga. – Lipscomb men’s soccer got the first opportunity to test itself against another opponent Saturday morning as the Bisons traveled to Macon, Georgia to take on Mercer in an exhibition match less than a week after opening fall camp.
The Bisons and Bears played an even match throughout, finishing in a 1-1 draw at Bear Field.
Mercer seemed to be in control in the early minutes of action after firing off the first pair of attempts, but both shots sailed high. It was not until the 24th-minute that the visiting Bisons were able to put some real pressure on the Bears.
Junior Javier Leija put the team’s first corner in play and then less than one minute later, he pushed a header wide for Lipscomb’s first shot of the match.
The homestanding Bears opened the scoring in the 35th minute on a penalty kick after the Bisons were whistled for a foul in the box. Roberto Arteaga buried the PK to put Mercer on top 1-0.
Mercer held its lead into the second half before the Bisons tied it up in the 53rd minute off the foot of freshman Daniel Zapata.
Lipscomb had its chances in the second period as Ryan Birchfield put a shot off the crossbar in the 65th minute, and Austin Strout tried to head the rebound in, but it was reeled in by Mercer’s JR DeRose.
Redshirt sophomore Luke Wilson got the start in net for the purple and gold and came away with three saves in just over 46 minutes of action. Senior keeper Chris Zappia played the remainder of the match and scooped up one stop.
- In the first of three exhibition matches that will be used to get experience for players, 21 Bisons saw playing time Saturday, including seven newcomers.
- Mercer outshot Lipscomb 11-6 overall and 5-3 in shots on target.
- However, the Bisons did register a 5-3 advantage in corner kicks.
- Strout led the team with two shot attempts.
