Men's Soccer wins share of ASUN Title with 2-1 win over Stetson on senior night

NASHVILLE – For the first time since 2014 the Lipscomb men’s soccer team finished on top of the ASUN Conference standings with a share of the regular season championship, courtesy of a 2-1 victory over Stetson on senior night at the Lipscomb Soccer Complex Saturday.

Lipscomb and FGCU share the ASUN crown after both squads recorded 15 points in league play with identical 5-1 records.

The Bisons, after dropping the conference opener at Jacksonville in September, have reeled off five consecutive ASUN victories, including a 3-2 win over the Eagles. That victory over FGCU is what gives Lipscomb the No. 1 seed in next week’s Championship.

Lipscomb (7-9, 5-1 ASUN) wasted no time in attacking the Hatters with everything it had. Logan Paynter ripped a shot at the net in the first minute, but it was saved. A few seconds later it was Louis Robinson’s time, but he sailed it just over the crossbar. Paynter and Daniel Zapata had another pair of shots stopped over the next couple minutes.

In total, the Bisons fired off five shots and won two corner kicks in the first six minutes of action, but had nothing to show for on the scoreboard.

In fact, it was Stetson (6-9-1, 1-4-1) that got on the board first in the eighth minute with a free kick from near 25 yards out.

Lipscomb responded in the 24th minute when Robinson spun and placed one just under the bar from the top of the box to equalize. Two minutes later it was Paynter’s turn.

The senior striker scampered up the left side of the field and took a beautiful pass from John Wynia in the box. Paynter buried it past the keeper and into the left side of the net for the game-winner in the 26th tick.

The Bisons defense came up with huge plays down the stretch to secure their second regular season title in program history.

In a pregame ceremony the 2018 senior class was recognized at midfield as their family and friends escorted. Paynter, Ryan Birchfield, Trystan Innes, Austin Strout and Chris Zappia were honored in the last regular season match of their careers.

QUICK HITS

  • The Bisons outshot the Hatters 10-1 in the first half, and 13-7 overall.
  • Paynter’s score was his team-leading seventh of the year. He is now one shy of tying Garret Pettis’ school record mark of 34.
  • Wynia picked up his team-leading fifth assist of the season. Zapata added his second.
  • Zappia came away with three saves in net. He is now 6-4 between the pipes this season.
  • Paynter led the way with five shots and three on goal.
  • Raphael Northoff chipped in his first goal of the season for Stetson.
