Men's soccer unveils challenging 2019 slate

NASHVILLE – The Lipscomb men’s soccer team and head coach Charles Morrow have announced the schedule for their 2019 season.

After last season’s unforgettable run to the Sweet Sixteen of the NCAA Tournament, the two-time defending ASUN champions will face a challenging slate of opponents in the fall.

“It’s a tough schedule,” Morrow said. “Based on where we’re at as a program and our ambitions of where we want to be, this is the kind of schedule that we need. Not only to prepare ourselves for conference play, but hopefully prepare ourselves for play beyond conference in the NCAA Tournament.”

The schedule includes six teams that finished 2018 ranked in the RPI top-100 and three NCAA Tournament squads. There are also nine conferences represented on the schedule (ACC, AAC, MVC, WCC, Sun Belt, SoCon, Big East, C-USA, and ASUN), giving the Bisons a well-rounded group of opponents.

“It’s a schedule that will challenge us in a lot of different ways,” Morrow said. “I think that we have a good mix of teams in terms of styles that we’re going to see, and that’s what’s needed to get us ready for postseason play.”

The season will kick off with a pair of exhibition games. The Bisons will travel to face Louisville (No. 5 in the final 2018 RPI rankings) on Aug. 16. Last year, Lipscomb won 3-2 in Louisville during the regular season, earning the program’s first-ever road victory over a top 10 team.

Lipscomb will then welcome the AAC’s Cincinnati to Nashville on Aug. 24 to close out the preseason slate.

The Purple and Gold will open up the regular season with a trio of road games against top-100 teams from 2018: Aug. 30 at SMU (49), Sept. 2 at Tulsa (94), and Sept. 7 at ETSU (48).

“It’s really easy to mark those teams on your schedule that are going to be big challenges and guys can get up for those games,” Morrow said. “But, I think what we have to work on as a group, and what really will take our program to the next level, is consistency of performances and approaching every game like it’s the most important game of the season.”

“We’ve proved over the last few years that we’re a team who can compete with any team in the country on any given day. What we have yet to prove is that we can be the team to beat on every occasion.”

The Bisons will make their regular season home debut on Sept. 10 as the MVC’s Evansville comes to Nashville. Lipscomb will then host South Florida on Sept. 13 before starting the conference slate at home vs Jacksonville on Sept. 21. Lipscomb will close out the four-game homestand against Santa Clara on Sept. 27.

“Every conference team is good enough to beat us if we don’t bring our best,” Morrow said. “There’s not one team in the conference you can look past. It’s about finding a balance of being as competitive as you can be in those mid-week nonconference games and being at your absolute best for those six conference games that you play because there’s a thin margin for error.”

Lipscomb will travel to face ASUN foe FGCU (64 in the final RPI standings) for their first conference road match on Oct. 5 to lead off a busy month. The Bisons will play Georgia State (85 in RPI) on Oct. 8, at Stetson on Oct. 12, the Big East’s Butler on Oct. 16, NJIT on Oct. 19, at UAB on Oct. 22, and against UNF for their final home game on Oct. 26.

The Bisons will close out the regular season at Liberty on Nov. 2. The ASUN Tournament will begin on Nov. 8 with the semifinals taking place on Nov. 10 and the final on Nov. 16.
